Fellowships: Hematopathology Fellowship

Welcome to the University of New Mexico Hematopathology Fellowship Program website! We have a top notch training program with outstanding faculty, a wealth of neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopathology cases, opportunities for research, and an integrated reference laboratory including on-site flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular genetics laboratories. Our program serves New Mexico and the surrounding southwestern United States, as well as having a large national hematopathology consultation practice. Our fellows are highly sought after and go on to academic and community practice positions. Come visit us in the Land of Enchantment.

George

Tracy George, M.D.

Tracy I. George, M.D., Director of the Hematopathology Fellowship Program, did her medical training and residency in anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of California San Francisco. She completed fellowships in hematopathology and surgical pathology at Stanford University. At the University of New Mexico, Dr. George is the Hematopathology Fellowship Director and Division Chief of Hematopathology. She has an active research program in mast cell disease, >100 total publications, and enjoys mentoring and teaching trainees at all levels. Most recently, Dr. George is chairing an ASCP/ASH/France Foundation educational grant aimed at improving the diagnosis, classification, and clinical care of myelodysplastic syndrome; this grant uses a flipped teaching model to improve the educational experience. This builds upon Dr. George’s prior experience as chair of the CAP Hematology and Clinical Microscopy Resource Committee where she developed the routine use of virtual slides for hematology/clinical microscopy proficiency testing and CME/CE activities.

Chabot-Richards

Devon Chabot-Richards, M.D.

Dr. Chabot-Richards is Medical Director of the Transplant Laboratory and Assistant Director of Flow Cytometry. She has expertise in benign hematology and hemoglobin electrophoresis as well as molecular genetics and cytogenetics. She is an enthusiastic teacher of residents and fellows and won the Pathology Department Faculty Award for Teaching in 2015.

Czuchlewski

David Czuchlewski, M.D.

Dr. Czuchlewski received his MD degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at Weill Cornell Medical College, followed by fellowships in hematopathology and molecular genetic pathology at the University of New Mexico. At UNM he is the associate director of the hematopathology fellowship training program, as well as associate director of the molecular diagnostic laboratory at TriCore and senior director for education in the Department of Pathology. He is the author of numerous articles, textbooks, and book chapters, and enjoys teaching everyone from medical students (as co-course director of the first year Hematology course) to experienced pathologists (as a frequent faculty member at CAP, ASCP, and USCAP meetings). He is currently pursuing a master's degree in education at Johns Hopkins University and actively incorporates best teaching practices into the hematopathology fellowship program.

Kathy Foucar, M.D.

Dr. Foucar received her BS and MD degrees from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and her specialty training in Laboratory Medicine and Anatomic Pathology at the University of New Mexico Affiliated Hospitals: Albuquerque, NM and the University of Minnesota Medical School. She is a Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs, Pathology, and in the University of New Mexico School of Medicine at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She serves as the Medical Director of Genetics and Cytometry Services for TriCore Reference Laboratories. She is the author/co-author or editor of twelve books on neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopathology with an emphasis on blood and bone marrow, and over 115 peer reviewed publications.

Mohammad Vasef, M.D.

Affiliations: Professor of Pathology, Director of Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory and Program Director of Molecular Genetic Pathology Fellowship at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center/TriCore Reference Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico

Dr. Vasef graduated from the University of Tehran, Faculty of Medicine. He completed combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency training at Mt. Sinai Medical Center, an affiliate of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and, completed a fellowship in Hematopathology at the City of Hope National Medical Center, in Duarte, California. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, authored several books and most recently was the lead author of "Molecular Oncology" in Diagnostic Pathology Series of Amirsys. Dr. Vasef's areas of research and interest include hematopathology and molecular genetic pathology.

Wilson

Carla S. Wilson M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Wilson received her BS degree from Cornell University and her PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She completed medical training and residency in clinical and anatomic pathology at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, with fellowship training in hematopathology at the City of Hope National Medical Center, Duarte, CA. She is the Medical Director of Flow Cytometry for TriCore Reference Laboratories and a Professor in the Department of Pathology.

Research interests have involved gene expression profiling of patients with acute leukemia at the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center and work with plasma cell disorders. She enjoys teaching and is currently on the Curriculum Committee for CAP with prior appointments on the CAP SAM Committee, CAP Hematology and Clinical Microscopy Resource Committee and ASCP Quality Management Hematopathology Committee.

Qian-Yun Zhang, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Zhang received her medical degree from West China University of Medical Science (AKA Sichuan Medical College 1952-1985 or Sichuan University Medical Center 2000-present), and her PhD from University of Sussex, England, UK. She received her Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency training from College of Medicine and Life Science, University of Toledo (AKA Medical College of Ohio) and the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Albuquerque, NM. She completed her hematopathology fellowship training at the University of New Mexico. Dr. Zhang is the medical director of the University Hospital Laboratory Hematology, associated director of Hematopathology division, associated director of cytogenetic laboratory, medical director of the Clinical Lab of Clinical & Translational Science Center, University of New Mexico. Dr. Zhang serves on Clinical Laboratory Improvement Advisory Committee (CLIAC) of Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Instrumentation Resource Committee of College of American Pathologists (CAP). Dr. Zhang’s research interests include B cell chronic leukemias. Dr. Zhang is deeply involved in teaching of all levels and her major roles include co-block chair for phase I medical student curriculum Genetics and Neoplasia block for the past four years and co-block chair for the newly developed Hematology block.
