Dr. Cosette Wheeler, UNM Professor of Pathology, recently served as one of the co-chairs of a series of national workshops to identify barriers to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake and steps to overcome them. These workshops resulted in a report whose findings were  conveyed by the President’s Cancer Panel to President Obama. The Panel found that underuse of HPV vaccines is a serious but correctable threat in the progress against cancer and presents several goals to increase HPV vaccine uptake in the US and globally. Dr. Wheeler’s HPV Prevention Center in the Pathology Department at UNM is nationally recognized as a leader in research on the molecular biology of HPV infection, population-based surveillance of HPV infection, and educational interventions to increase HPV awareness.
